Extra Extra Read All About It !!!

The news is just in. Senator FD signed the dizzletown war resolution on high blood pressure (HBP). He proclaims war on HBP and asserts that issues surrounding terrorism can wait. In an earlier press conference, he says the war on HBP will be attcked on three fronts.

Exercise
Senator FD will march to the gym 5 times a weeks for a 90minute cardio/30minute weights training. Senator FD further added that during the cardio portion of the training, he'll have to maintain a heart rate (HR)* of below 65% of his maximum HR. This will place him in the fat burning zone.

Reduce Sodium Intake
Senator FD will reduce his salt intake. The current recommendation is to consume less than 2.4 grams (2,400 mg ) of sodium a day. That equals 6 grams (about 1 teaspoon) of table salt a day. The 6 grams include ALL salt and sodium consumed, including that used in cooking and at the table. For someone with HBP, the doctor may advise eating less salt and sodium, as recent research has shown that people consuming diets of 1,500 mg of sodium had even better blood pressure lowering benefits.

Healthy Eating
Research has shown that following a healthy eating plan can both reduce the risk of developing high blood pressure and lower an already elevated blood pressure. For an overall eating plan, Senator FD will follow the DASH eating plan. "DASH" stands for "Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension," a clinical study that tested the effects of nutrients in food on blood pressure. Study results indicated that elevated blood pressures were reduced by an eating plan that emphasizes fruits, vegetables, and lowfat dairy foods and is low in saturated fat, total fat, and cholesterol. The DASH eating plan includes whole grains, poultry, fish, and nuts and has reduced amounts of fats, red meats, sweets, and sugared beverages.

Lastly, Senator FD will record his BP readings every week along with his weight. It has become quite clear from the interview that Senator FD is taking a serious stance against HBP. This is evident in his parting words: "HBP will acknowledge my resolve when it is staring down the barrel of my gun!"

*Formule to calculate maximum heart rate (MHR):
220 - individual's age (for males)
226 - individual's age (for females)
Fat burning zone is 65% and below of your MHR or 85% and above of your MHR
Cardio zone (heart strengthening zone) is between 65% and 85% of your MHR
Senator FD's example: 220 - 27 = 193.
So his MHR is 193. Therefore his HR must be 125 and below or 164 and above for his fat burning zone. His HR got to be between 125 and 164 for his cardio zone.
