It's Time to STEP it UP a Notch

I have decided to step it up a notch in my fight against high blood pressure. I did some research on the internet on recommended steps to lower High Blood Pressure (HBP). It does pay to be informed. Apart from losing weight, research has also shown that potassium does lower HBP. So I'm taking proactive steps to up my potassium intake.
-------
My diet will incorporate foods that are high in potassium. The last thing I want to do is force myself to eat something I dislike (even if it is high in potassium) because this action plan is for the long haul and forcing myself to eat what I dislike might temp me to quit altogether. The list:
  1. Bananas
  2. Plain Yogurt
  3. Low Fat Milk
  4. Tomatoes
  5. Raisins
  6. Baked Potatoes (with skin)
  7. Honey Dew/ Cantaloupe
  8. Lima Beans

-------

I'm trying to go natural as much as possible, instead of popping pills but I'm trying to strike a balance as well. For example, baked potatoes with the skin on contains very high amounts of potassium but at the same time, it is not wise to eat too many because it is high in calories and losing weight is part of my master plan to lower my HBP as well - that's where the pills come in.

-------

In comparison, each pill contains 99mg of potassium BUT each baked potato contains more than 1000mg of potassium.

See my dilemma?

-------

Anyway. I'll keep on monitoring my HBP weekly and see how things go. Results are looking good thus far. This will be a step forward. I feel a little weird though... because before the whole issue of my HBP, I used to soak my feet in a pail of potassium laced water as part of my treatment for athlete's foot.

I need to tell myself repeatedly that potassium does not taste like feet!

Personal Trainer Uses 'Beefy' Motivational Lingo

~ A Prime Cut of Japan's Famous Wagyu Beef ~
a
Today I heard something funny at the gym. A personal trainer was trying to motivate his female client to give a little more 'Oomph' to her workout. The following was what I overheard.
-------
"Come on! Push Woman! Hold it... hold it... Good. I'll show you that underneath is some Grade 'A' Wagyu Beef!"
-------
I tried so hard to contain my giggles. They were at arm's length, training on the abs machine. I wonder how the lady took the trainer's motivational lingo? Does she even know what is wagyu beef? If the trainer had said that to me, I would have been so discouraged man... imagine all the hard work on the abs machine just so I could get 'marbled unsaturated fat' ? That trainer seriously needs to revise his motivational vocabulary.

The End Justifying the Means?

- took this photo on a bus -
I wonder who is the stupid one? I guess some still believe that in all things, the end will justify the means to which the end would eventuate. We have a clear example, staring at us, everyday.
  1. Keep the people silent, because we value peace.
  2. Freedom of press is allowed, just put up some hostage money.
  3. Diversity is welcomed, therefore foreign talents preferred embraced.

For That I am Grateful #2 - Encouraging Entrepreneurship

I remembered...

The time when my dad would give me a dollar for every mosquito I killed in the house. In those days, there were quite a number of dengue fever cases in our neighbourhood (spread by the ades mosquito), so my dad made this proposal. I guarded the blood stained carcasses of those buggers with my life ( I was less than 10 years old then, S$1 was like gold!). However, it soon became evident that my efforts did not suffice, because both me and my dad got diagnosed with dengue fever some time later. Perhaps the mosquitoes overheard his 'indecent' proposal and decided to punish both the instigator and executor. Bloody buggers. *waves fist of fury*

Living Christianity #4 - The Link that is Still Missing

Once again, scientist and paleontologist made the headlines by exclaiming that they have "once again" found the missing link - this time from the fossil of a fish. The link that is supposed to "prove" that man is a product of evolution - that our existence started from an amoeba. Seriously, I need more faith to believe that my origins stem from a single cell organism than to believe that I am a product of God's mind.
-------
I had wanted to exercise some apologetics, but figured I did not know enough to refute every claim made by these learned people. So instead I will try to use reason.
-------
In the field of medicine, there is a common saying. "If you hear hoof beats, assume horses not zebras." Doctors are advised not to read too much into their initial findings. I believe the same principle can be applied to the quest to find the origin of man.
-------
When someone finds a fossil of a fish with vertebrates (back bones) and one without, why can't they have a more simplistic view that one fish has got what the other fish doesn't? Why must they postulate that the fish without the vertebrates is the ancestor of the fish with vertebrates and that one evolved from the other because of natural selection? Again, with all the different "ape" men being excavated. Why can't they conclude that they were perhaps another living thing altogether? Instead, they insist that those ape man was our ancestors with absolutely no concrete proof whatsoever. Their reports are filled with words like "perhaps, could, would, imaginable" but sorely lacks solid scientific PROOF that their findings are irrefutable.
-------
Over the years, I have listened to many preachers pastors teachers, preaching pastoring and teaching against the idea of evolution using the Word of God (the Bible). However, there is only one ratiocination that truly sealed my beliefs. This person chose to appeal to our common sense to rebut the theory of evolution.
-------
[ I am walking down the street. I am on the sidewalk and I see in front of me quarters (US$0.25), scattered, 8 quarters. If I see 8 quarters scattered on the sidewalk in front of me, I can look at them and conclude that this was an accident, someone dropped them. But if I come down that same sidewalk and I see those same 8 quarters in 2 stacks of 4, side by side, I must conclude someone put them there. Why? Because this demostrates order. So the universe of law and order tells us of intelligent design, we cannot say it's an accident. ]
-------
Evolution? Yeah right... ...

The Day My Heart Stopped Twice

Today was like any other day. That's a lie. Today was not like any other day. It was a very trying day. I had this song in my head.
-------
L.O.V.E. - Olivia Ong ( A Gril Meets Bossanova 2 )
L is for the when you look at me
O is for the only one I see
V is the very very extra ordinary
E is even more then anyone that you adore
LOVE is all that I can give to you
LOVE is more then just a game for two
Two and love can make it
Take my heart but please don't break it
LOVE was made for me and you
LOVE was made for me and you
-------
I thought I was singing this song in my head until I saw a couple of weird stares from a couple of people.I did not realize that I was projecting the song out of my mouth as well. I then proceeded to bury my head in the sand, totally embarrassed.
-------
Just when I thought this day was through, something else happened. To put this incident into context, you'll have to know that I have been on the hunt for a present for yaliooh since her birthday is around the corner. I'm a pragmatic person so I would see something, give an sms to yaliooh and ask if she would like that for her present. So anyway, my search was not fruitful. She is a hard one to please. This afternoon, I received an sms from yaliooh stating what she desired. My new Sony Ericsson K800i has this feature where it gives a short preview of the sms once it is received. The user has to open up the sms to see the full message. When I saw the preview, my jaw just dropped.
The preview read: "Ok i wan a nice bra"
The full message: "Ok i wan a nice bracelet. that won't break!!"
-------
Enough excitment for one day...

Extra Extra Read All About It !!!

The news is just in. Senator FD signed the dizzletown war resolution on high blood pressure (HBP). He proclaims war on HBP and asserts that issues surrounding terrorism can wait. In an earlier press conference, he says the war on HBP will be attcked on three fronts.
-------
Exercise
Senator FD will march to the gym 5 times a weeks for a 90minute cardio/30minute weights training. Senator FD further added that during the cardio portion of the training, he'll have to maintain a heart rate (HR)* of below 65% of his maximum HR. This will place him in the fat burning zone.

Reduce Sodium Intake
Senator FD will reduce his salt intake. The current recommendation is to consume less than 2.4 grams (2,400 mg ) of sodium a day. That equals 6 grams (about 1 teaspoon) of table salt a day. The 6 grams include ALL salt and sodium consumed, including that used in cooking and at the table. For someone with HBP, the doctor may advise eating less salt and sodium, as recent research has shown that people consuming diets of 1,500 mg of sodium had even better blood pressure lowering benefits.

Healthy Eating
Research has shown that following a healthy eating plan can both reduce the risk of developing high blood pressure and lower an already elevated blood pressure. For an overall eating plan, Senator FD will follow the DASH eating plan. "DASH" stands for "Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension," a clinical study that tested the effects of nutrients in food on blood pressure. Study results indicated that elevated blood pressures were reduced by an eating plan that emphasizes fruits, vegetables, and lowfat dairy foods and is low in saturated fat, total fat, and cholesterol. The DASH eating plan includes whole grains, poultry, fish, and nuts and has reduced amounts of fats, red meats, sweets, and sugared beverages.
-------
Lastly, Senator FD will record his BP readings every week along with his weight. It has become quite clear from the interview that Senator FD is taking a serious stance against HBP. This is evident in his parting words: "HBP will acknowledge my resolve when it is staring down the barrel of my gun!"
A
This is Mr Holiday reporting live from dizzletown.
-------
*Formule to calculate maximum heart rate (MHR):
220 - individual's age (for males)
226 - individual's age (for females)
Fat burning zone is 65% and below of your MHR or 85% and above of your MHR
Cardio zone (heart strengthening zone) is between 65% and 85% of your MHR
Senator FD's example: 220 - 27 = 193.
So his MHR is 193. Therefore his HR must be 125 and below or 164 and above for his fat burning zone. His HR got to be between 125 and 164 for his cardio zone.

Honesty is like a breath of fresh air

" I REFER to the letter by Mr Bertrand Teo Ming Shan, 'Can ICA be flexible in dual citizenship case?' (ST, Sept 27). Dual citizenship is a policy that has to be considered carefully and thoroughly. We have yet to reach the stage of nation-hood where a Singaporean with a second citizen-ship would still retain his identity and loyalty to Singapore as his homeland wherever he goes, with his second citizenship being only of secondary importance. " - Lim Jing Jing (Ms) Senior Public & Internal Communications Executive Immigration & Checkpoints Authority
- [ The Straits Times FORUM, 'Singapore not ready for dual citizenship', 14 October 2006, Page H16 ]
-------
I was rather taken aback - in a good way - when I read this response in papers this morning. I thought to myself "finally, some honesty." Usually for issues as sensitive as 'national pride' or 'nation-hood' or the likes, the relevent authority figure will ask their underlings to issue a general templated politically-correct vague response. Those responses are seldom to the point and usually leave us - the people - with more questions than answers. They would also usually adopt a I-know-what-you-are-saying-but-I-do-not-want-you-to- know-that-I-know defensive pose. It gives them more room to manoeuvre later on.
-------
So that is why I find that response particularly refeshing. No bull, straight to the heart of the matter. If I were to paraphrase, this is how it would be:
Question: Can ICA be flexible on dual citizenship?
Answer: No. We (the powers that be) are not confident that Singaporean citizens would retain their identity as a Singaporean and remain loyal to the republic once their lips touch the first blade of grass on (what they perceive to be) the greener pasture.
-------
How true. I pose a challenge to the authorities. Make a survey of a big diverse group of people, especially the young adults. Ask them.
Would they leave Singapore if his/her desired country offers him/her citizenship? and Why?
-------
Here is my prediction. Some will say YES others will say NO. That is a given. But the interesting part is held within their reasons behind their choice.
-------
Those who say YES would probably do so for the following reasons:
  1. Future looks brighter. Financially more appealing.
  2. Desired country is less restrictive, more accomodating.
  3. Ability to own a house comfortably, a house that makes the HDB look like a guest room.

Those who say NO is probably beacause of the following reasons:

  1. Family members are old and would frown on the idea of relocating.
  2. Unadventurous. The idea of living in a foreign land is intimidating.
  3. They find comfort and security in the system which they are used to.

-------

From the above, you can tell why the interesting portion of the survey lies in the young adults. Those who have the energy and curiousity to see what's out there. Now that I am starting my new job, I will work hard and sniff out opportunities to work overseas, because unlike the masses, my eyes are already opened.

Loyalty to this utilitarian oligarchy? Unfortunately, I do not have an underling to provide a general templated politically-correct vague response to this question. a

The Great The Good and The Not-So-Good

Woah man... I got great news, I got good news and I got not-so-good news all in one day.
-------
The great news is: My efforts paid off. I got my desired job.
The good news is: My bad number got a little bit better.
140/90
The not-so-good news is: The doctor at the clinic referred me to a cardiologist because at my age I should not have issues with high blood pressure. That's a bummer. I'm actually a little worried. This is really a wake up call, my body is telling me it cannot take as much crap as it used to when I was way way younger.
-------
So I choose not to fret. Just pray. Go to the gym. Watch what I eat. Lose weight and all these nonsense will go away.

My Negro Amigo Bites Back #4 - Smoked!

The haze is back, with a vengence! In Singapore, the PSI* reading hit and unhealthy 150 at 2100hrs on the 7th October 2006. Toxic haze shrouds our city. In response, My Negro Amigo(MNA) will issue an astute comment.
-------
Here are some recent excerpts of newspaper articles, presented as a prelude to what MNA has to comment in a point/counter-point fashion. Portions of these excerpts will be highlighted in red to draw attention to its absurdity and audaciousness.
-------
"President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono yesterday apologised to Singapore and Malaysia for the haze caused by land-clearing fires in Indonesia. Speaking to reporters soon after a meeting with his officials, Dr Yudhoyono said "On behalf of the Indonesian government, I have to apologize to the neighbouring countries for this incident, even though clearly this is not an intentional (act) by Indonesia. Clearly this is not a problem we intend to inflict on our neighbours, and we are continuously trying to tackle it and prevent it in future." The apology came amid frustraion and rising anger in the region over the problem. ... ..."
- [ The Straits Times , 'Yudhoyono says sorry to S'pore, Malaysia for haze', 12 October 2006, Page 1]
  • He is so incredibly insincere and childish. So Indonesia's president does not WANT to apologize but he felt compelled to? Why, because of the surmounting frustration and rising anger in the region that is suffering because of his incompetent government? What's worse, after giving the insincere apology, he added an excuse which turned out to also be a lie. It is almost like a parent forcing a child to say sorry, afterwhich, the child does so obediently, but also grudgingly and reluctantly.
  • And what is this "continuously trying to tackle..." bullshit? This problem did not start this year, it did not start last year and it certainly did not start the year before that, it started more than NINE years ago. So if what he said was true, then that proves that Indonesia's current and previous government is inadequte/unwilling to tackle this issue. Come on, it has been more than nine years, we have be tolerant for more than nine years, surely if there is a problem with resources or infrastructure or whatever it is Indonesia's government has got a problem with, nine years is more than enough to rectify this problem. Again, if nine years isn't enough, seriously, how does this reflect on Indonesia's leadership?
  • Furthermore, President Yudhoyono is once again telling a half-truth. All these forest fires that is causing all this toxic haze to spread in this region is INTENTIONAL. He claims it isn't. But we are not uneducated fools. Take a look at the 3rd articles below. Indonesia's farmers are DELIBERATELY setting fire to the land to prepare it for planting crops. If this isn't intent then what is? Is he claiming ignorance?
-------
"Singaporeans and Malaysians who complain bout the haze caused by fires in Indonesia should be fair, said Indonesia's Forestry Minister. They ought to reflect on how they have never thanked their neighbour for the oxygen produced by its forest, he said. Describing the complains as "natural", Mr M.S. Kaban was quoted in Tuesday's evening daily Sinar Harapan as saying: "Our Forest produce oxygen which makes the cool air for them, but they have never been grateful. Now there is a haze, they complain. There should be a balance." It was not the first such sentiment expressed by an Indonesian politician. In July, South Sumatra's regional paper Sriwijaya Post reported a legislator making identical remarks during a workign visit to the region responsible for a large number of hot spots. Commenting on pressure on Indonesia to ratify a regional anti-haze agreement, Mr Nazarudin Kiemas has said that the world owed Indonesia for the oxygen the country produces. ... ..."
- [ The Straits Times , 'Be grateful forest provide oxygen: Jakarta minister', 12 October 2006, Page 10]
  • Where do I even begin? What sort of desperate nonsense is Indonesia's Forestry Minister spouting? What, we have to be grateful for the oxygen that they provide? Hellloooo... there are so many faults in his argument. Oxygen is for everyone living on this planet, provided by every single plant life that photosynthesizes. If Indonesia wants to be specific about the amount of oxygen others are ENTITLED to, can they enforce it? Can they say, "Do not breathe?" or "Tourists must pay a levy for breathing when they are on Indonesian soil?" Ludicrous isn't it?
  • Fine, if I allow myself to be illogical for but a moment, and entertain the idea of having an 'balanced' view, like that of the minister, are we to say that for every unit of oxygen we get from Indonesia, we must endure that same amount of toxic pollutants Indonesia is producing?
  • If you want an even more 'balanced' view, if we do continue to endure the haze and let Indonesia go about burning forrests, will they provide recompense for the BILLIONS of dollars the region had lost over these years because of the haze? This includes damages in agriculture production, health, transportation, tourism, and other economic endeavours. Is this line of argument balanced enough for Mr M.S. Kaban?
-------
"Farmer Donny Manik took the day off on Sunday. Too tired to go to church, he sat on his verandah, watching the antics of his two dogs. The day before, he had toiled on the land, piling up dead wood and leaves and setting the heap on fire. The somke added to the haze blanketing the Pelelewan region of Riau province. For the 26 year-old migrant from North Tapanuli in North Sumatra province, the slash-and-burn method is the quickest, cheapest way of clearing his 1ha plot. "I want to plant oil palm because it's more profitable than other crops," he tells me.When I asked if he knows about the havoc the smoke from fires here has created in MAlaysia and Singapore, he is taken aback. "Sorry if it happened," he says. "It must be the wind that blew the smoke all the way there." ... ... "
- [ The Straits Times , 'Blame the wind, say farmers as haze thinkens', 10 October 2006, Page 1]
  • These fires are lit deliberately. I must say, I can emphatize, burning their land is all these farmers know how to do to survive. But why isn't the Indonesian government doing more to educate these people, to give them an alternative?
  • Why aren't Indonesia's current laws enforced? Are all the agreements that Indonesia had made to its neighbouring countries - in regard to the haze issue - just lip service?
  • Do the Indonesian government take us - the victims of the haze - for fools to accept that they are powerless because Indonesia is such a big country and they do not have enough resources?
  • Do they think that we - like those Indonesian farmers - will just blame the wind?

-------

So wake up your bloody idea! Screw your own country if you want to but be more considerate of your neighbours. Your inadequacy to handle this issue is affecting the lives of millions of people. I pity the fool who's trying to blow smoke in our eyes with weak reasoning, for our eyes are already covered by the veritable veil of toxicity in the air. Do something about it!

a

Sony Ericsson K800i

I thought of doing a thought provoking post today but I was too lazy to organize my material. Instead, this post will be about my new mobile phone. A review.
-------
Puzzling thoughts about the process of purchasing a new mobile phone.
I do not understand why people are satisfied with touching and feeling a dummy phone displayed at most retailers. If all they want to do is look at the design and dimensions of the product, a quick search on the net is all that is required. Besides, a mobile phone is an expensive product, so why won't the retailers display a fully functioning mobile phone for potential clients to touch, feel and experience both hardware and software? It matters a little less to me because I understand all the technical mumbo jumbo but I do not think the same holds true for many others. It really puzzles me that anyone would be willing to pay hundreds of dollars for a product after merely looking at it.
-------
Doing research was rather easy. Most - if not all - of the information is available on the internet. My options were Nokia N73, Samsung SGH D900 and Sony Ericsson K800i. I was initially very attracted to the slim Samsung phone but the pragmatic part of me overpowered the vain part of me. It is a well establish fact that flip phones and sliding phones do not last as long as candy-bar phones. For one simple reason - it has moving parts.
-------
Let me digress a little: the same reasoning can be said for hard drives (HD), that's why flash drives are the 'in' thing right now because unlike the HD, it has no moving parts, hence it is more reliable, and also more expensive.
-------
Then I set my sights on the Nokia N73. This phone obtained rave reviews. All the tech magazines - online and offline - praised it like there was no tomorrow. I compared it with the Sony Ericsson and did a cost functionality assessment. Whaddya know, Sony Ericsson came out tops. It had better features and it costs less than the N73. I must admit, the N73 looked better than the K800i, but it cost S$200 more. Enuff said.
-------
Being a Nokia user all this while, I had some apprehension about adapting to SonyE's software, but all my worries melted away after the first day. The software is quite dummy-proof. Sony Ericsson has won me over. For it's full specs, click here, for reviews, google it yourself.

The Highlight of My Week

~ Cute Stray At SHELL Petrol Station ~
I spotted this cat at a petrol station on my way back home from gym. In Singapore, strays are common, however, this stray was rather unique. It looked clean, relaxed and is very people friendly. Students from a neighbourhood school would walk by and pet um... him. ( I guess it is a 'him', I have not verified this but it definately looks like a 'him' )
-------
After the 5th day, coming back from the gym, I was actually looking forward to see him. He has since gained the favour of all the people at the petrol pump, well all but one. An uncle on the morning shift chased him away to a nearby coffeeshop, but he returned the next day.
-------
I observed that he was pretty smart too. He loves air-conditioning but he knows his boundaries, so he would pop his head in whenever someone opens the door but not step into the mini-mart. Another thing. The first day, he was lying on top of Coke cartons. After he was chased away because customers wanted Coke, he began to lie on other cartons of drinks that were not so popular.
-------
Kudos. I shall call him KIRK.

No Wonder I am Not Losing Weight

I have gone to my gym 4 times since my membership commenced. I'm pretty satisfied with the equipment they have, but just a little disappointed with the hair-dryers they provide. Seriously, if you put it to 'cool' mode, it has just enough power to blow dry a mosquito.
-------
The BEST thing however, is the towels they provide. I realized that all the towels have a strong honey scent. Very sweet smelling, very yummy, maybe that's why I have hunger pangs every time I wipe my sweat. ...

Bad Number

For the first time in my life, today, I found out I have high blood pressure.
153/98
I have been fat before but my BP had always been fine. My body is telling me something and I better listen. By the way, thin people can get high BPs as well in case you're still stuck in the stone ages.

Get Rea! and Start Being Responsible

Tonight I caught episode 8 of "Get Rea!" - Animal Rights, Neighbour Rights. I do not want to go on about the details of the show. All I want to do here is point out an observation I've made.
-------
In this episode, the host Diana Ser posed a question to the person she was interviewing. " Do you think enough is done to make the public more aware of this issue?" (the issue being the abandonment of rabbits)
-------
My point is this: Responsible Pet Ownership starts before buying the pet. People who desire to have pets must be responsible enough to factor in the amount of time and commitment needed to provide adequate care for the animal. What is this nonsense being said about "making the public more aware" That is so absurd! Why should the public at large be educated by the government - or anyone for that matter - concerning rabbits or cats or whatever animal? Seriously, who the hell cares? Why should one be bombarded with information one cares nothing for? Why stop there, why not make the public more aware of all the gazillion issues plaguing our planet? That's a silly cause isn't it?
-------
Before you start being all self-righteous, let me say this. I'm a cat lover myself, in fact I do intend to purchase a cat in the future. But before I do, I would do some homework, go to the internet, ask a friend, read a book, I would do something to find out more about that breed, about what a cat needs, about all the information I need to know that pertains to the caring for the cat. I would want to know if I can handle it.
-------
Another point that was candidly brought up was the reluctance of pet shop owners to inform potential clients regarding the amount of commitment that is needed to own a pet. Because that might discourage a person from buying a pet from them. Again, that is another load of crap. It is like the blame is now being pinned on the owners of pet shops for not doing enough when (key point coming up) the onus lies with the person buying the pet.
Responsible pet ownership lies with the owner of the pet, PERIOD! So stop shifting the blame to the government and petshop owners and every Tom Dick Harry James John and Robert.
-------
Let me appeal to your ability to reason: If a married couple wants to start a family, isn't it reasonable and responsible for them to think things through?
  1. How many kids?
  2. Cost?
  3. Commitment?

Do you think they would just go ahead and procreate before fully understanding what lies ahead of them? If they do, then society labels them as irresponsible. Fault lies with them. I don't hear anyone complaining about inadequate childbearing awareness? So why is there a double standard for pets? Are they not living creatures as well?

-------

SO GET REA! AND START BEING RESPONSIBLE.

For That I am Grateful #1 - Mr Cane

As Promised, I'm starting a new column titled 'For That I am Grateful'. There is one very important thing that I was taught in church over the years, and that is to cultivate an Attitude of Gratitude. It seems that the ideology that our forefathers have embraced, this concept of being grateful to others, is no longer very common in our generation. My pastor tells us to be grateful for the BIG things as well as the small things. This attitude he says has got to be nurtured for it most certainly isn't innate. So here in this column, I will pen memories of the past and present, memories that I am grateful for.
-------
I remembered...
The time when I managed to dodge Chinese homework for an entire semester. After a spot check, my parents were called to school despite my tearful pleas to my teacher. After the meeting, I was 'dragged' home to face Mr Cane as I affectionately called the tool used for chastening. I was 'chastened' good but I knew that my dad's heart bled with every tear I shed. Needless to say, I became very diligent when it comes to my Chinese homework after that. Somehow that painful memory stuck with me.
